Writing the Land

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

blue skies poetry, in association with the Writers Guild of Alberta, is looking for poems by Alberta writers that explore the magnificent and diverse landscape of our province and how we interact with it. From the tar sands in the north, to the towering Rockies, to the bald prairie of the south – not to mention the rich farmland, forests and wandering rivers in-between – this land and its resources have shaped and continue to influence the history, culture, and economy of Alberta.

In celebration of the theme chosen for the 2007 Conference and AGM of the Writers Guild of Alberta, blue skies poetry will feature work by Albertan poets on the theme of "Writing the Land" throughout the month of September. The poems selected will also be included in an anthology to be released at the Conference and AGM in Grande Prairie (September 28-30), and several spaces will be reserved for contributors (on a first come, first served basis that evening) to read at the Open Mike Coffeehouse event. Each contributor will receive two copies of the anthology.

In addition, this project will connect with the "Power of the Land" concert to be held in Grande Prairie on October 20, 2007. For a preview of the concert, be sure to attend the Open Mike Coffeehouse at the conference.

To submit your work, email 1-3 poems, 50 lines maximum each, with "Writing the Land" in the subject line, to akublik@blueskiespoetry.ca. Please include a short biographical note, as well as your mailing address and home phone number. Submission deadline is August 15, 2007.

For those of you who do not live in Alberta, we trust that you will enjoy reading the work that results from this project. blue skies welcomes regular submissions during September and will return to posting work from across Canada and internationally in October.
