Girl
Singers
I like
girl singers
the way
I like
single malt.
Sound
through
my ear
scotch
across
my tongue
Waiting
for the
moment
when
a smoky
voice
a smoky
taste
delights
my very
core

PEONIES
Crossing Tiananmen Square
a woman
and child,
straight
backed, black hair
in
solemn steps
wei
lu
toward
the Forbidden City.
Bouquets
of white peonies in their hands
petals
falling on cobblestones.
While
the bitter wind
ku
feng
carries
their remembrance
across
the Square.

SOLSTICE
SKY
A red
morning sky
washes
black night
into
blue
The
apple tree
each
twig, branch, limb
coated
with frost
gleams
white
Eighteen
frozen apples
unpicked
in the fall
now,
bright red
hang
amidst ice crystals
drifting
between the branches
Crested
waxwings
in their
hundreds
their
thousands
whirl
across the day
The
weeping birch
bare of
leaves
lively
still
with
nuthatches, chickadees
flickers, blue jays
visiting
Sun
hurries
through
the day
taking a
last moment
to turn
sky
orange
and purple
reminding
tomorrow
will be longer

WINTER WIND
A hard winter wind
Ripped my old elm
tearing its heart
into two thick trunks.
Swept a nest
from bare branch hedge
placed it complete and perfect
on the March snow.
A hard winter wind
